A filmtörténet egyik, - minden értelemben - "legnagyobb" figurája mindig is ihletett Shakespeare rajongó volt. Bizonyítja ezt, hogy filmre vitte a nagy drámaíró több művét, és a színpadon is minden oldalról körüljárta, rendezőként és színészként egyaránt. Több más darab mellett színpadra állított egy híres "fekete Macbeth"-et, melyben Skóciából Tahitiba helyezte át a történetet. Shakespeare-filmek készítőjeként ugyancsak a Macbethtel debütált, s ezt csakhamar követte az Othello, melynek bemutatójakor Welles nem csupán az alapmű újszerű értelmezésével keltett feltűnést, hanem azokkal a formanyelvi megoldásokkal is, melyekkel filmszerűvé varázsolta a színpadi művet. A pénzügyi nehézségek miatt három évig, jórészt Welles színészi keresetéből több etapban, kisebb részt Olaszországban, nagyobb részt Marokkóban forgatott film a Cannes-i Nemzetközi Filmfesztiválon méltán nyerte el a megosztott nagydíjat.
