Au Kenya, dans les années 60, un professionnel de la chasse déprimé accepte d'être le guide d'un play-boy fortuné pour ce qui sera son dernier safari. Intérieurement, il a pris la décision de se retirer du circuit s'il parvient à retrouver l'éléphant fabuleux, Big Red, un animal presque mythique qui a provoqué la mort de son meilleur ami. Avec son client, il part à travers la savane pour réaliser sa quête, croisant au passage les bêtes sauvages qui peuplent les alentours du Kilimandjaro, rhinocéros et autres girafes...
