Με αφετηρία τα πραγματικά γράμματα που αντάλλασσαν κατά τον πόλεμο, η ταινία απεικονίζει πώς το ζευγάρι ήρθε σε σύγκρουση με τα μέλη της κλειστής κοινωνίας τους, την εκκλησία, την κυβέρνηση, ακόμη και τους φίλους τους — και πώς όλα αυτά τους οδήγησαν σε μια τραγική επιλογή.
