Auf der Bohrinsel von Alpha Gas vor Sylt läuft die Suche nach Methanhydrat auf Hochtouren. Der fossile Brennstoff soll Öl, Gas und Kohle in naher Zukunft ablösen. Um sich einen Vorsprung auf dem Weltmarkt zu verschaffen, operiert Alpha Gas ohne Genehmigung der EU-Umweltschutzbehörde. Der skrupellose Projektleiter Kramlick schlägt sogar die Warnungen des internen Umweltschutzbeauftragten Christian Wieland in den Wind und ordnet riskante Sprengungen an.
